Over the years the property has evolved into what it is today — a welcoming country retreat where guests can experience the space, calm and character of a North Canterbury homestead while still being close to the city.

Today the property is home to Custodian’s Cottage, a private retreat for guests seeking a peaceful escape, and in the future will also welcome a beautifully restored Airstream stay set within the cottage grounds.
Custodians Cottage
Custodian’s Cottage is an historic private retreat set within the grounds of River Lodge in North Canterbury.
Although the cottage sits on the property, it is entirely separate from the main house with its own driveway, entrance and outdoor space, allowing guests to enjoy complete privacy during their stay.
Inside the cottage you’ll find a warm, comfortable space designed for slowing down, while outside the highlight is the wood-fired hot tub, perfect for relaxing under the stars.
Just 20 minutes from Christchurch CBD, and 15 minutes from the airport, Custodian’s Cottage offers the best of both worlds — the quiet of the countryside with easy access to the city, North Canterbury’s wineries, rivers, walking tracks and small towns.

Step out the gate and wander along the Waimakariri River stopbank. Flat walking and cycling trails stretch for miles with wide river views.

Slow things down with a record from the small collection in the cottage. A glass of wine and a little music works surprisingly well out here.

On cooler evenings the outdoor fire is perfect for lingering outside a little longer. A BBQ is also available if you feel like cooking under the open sky.
